Most plants classified as "living stones" belong to the genus Lithops and have a maximum diameter of about 5cm. The Pleiospilos nelii grows a few centimeters larger and is therefore also called living granite. The entire plant consists of only two leaves (so-called lobes), which always differ in size and are usually buried up to two-thirds in the substrate. A strong taproot anchors the plants in the drought-prone soils and helps access deeper water sources.
